Choosing the Right
Foundation for Your Sauna

Everything you need to know about preparing the perfect base for your sauna — whether you're installing indoors or out.

By Sweat Kingdom · 6 min read · Site Preparation

"A sauna is only as good as the foundation it sits on."

You've picked your sauna. You're counting down the days until delivery. But before your unit arrives, there's one step that will make or break your long-term experience: site preparation.

Here's the good news for indoor installations — if you're placing your sauna inside your home, garage, or basement, you likely don't need to do anything at all. Most homes are built to handle the weight of a sauna, and interior floors are already level. Simply confirm your floor is in good condition and you're ready to go.

For outdoor installations, foundation preparation is the single most important thing you can do before installation day. A sauna placed on the wrong surface will sink, shift, and become unlevel over time — causing door seals to fail, structural stress to build up, and potentially voiding your warranty. The good news? It doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. This guide walks you through everything you need to know.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Installations

The foundation question really only applies to outdoor sauna installations. If your sauna is going inside — in a spare room, garage, basement, or gym space — you can skip this section entirely. Residential floors are engineered to support significant weight loads and are already level, making them ideal surfaces for any of our modular units right out of the box.

For outdoor installations, the surface your sauna sits on matters a great deal. A sauna is a substantial structure — even our modular units carry significant weight once assembled, and our custom builds are constructed like small homes. When that weight is distributed unevenly across a soft or unstable surface, problems compound over time.

Dirt, grass, mulch, and gravel that hasn't been properly compacted are all problematic. These surfaces shift with moisture, temperature changes, and the weight bearing down on them year after year. As the ground moves, so does your sauna — and rarely in a good way.

✓  Safe Surfaces
  • Concrete pad (poured or pre-existing)
  • Packed and compacted gravel
  • Pavers set on a compacted base
  • Structurally sound existing deck
✗  Avoid These
  • Bare dirt or soil
  • Grass or turf
  • Mulch or wood chips
  • Loose decorative gravel or pea gravel
  • Sand without a solid sub-base

The rule of thumb is simple: if it can shift, sink, or absorb water in a way that changes its level, it's not the right surface for your sauna.

The Four Approved Foundations

Each of the four foundation types we recommend has its own strengths. The right choice depends on your budget, timeline, and the specific location where your sauna will live.

01
Concrete Pad
Best Overall

The gold standard for sauna foundations. A properly poured concrete pad is permanent, perfectly level, and built to last decades. It handles weight distribution better than any other surface and is completely impervious to moisture-related shifting. If you're installing a custom sauna — or any unit you plan to keep in place permanently — a concrete pad is the way to go. You can pour a new pad for a few hundred dollars with a contractor, or use an existing driveway extension, patio slab, or garage floor.

02
Gravel
Most Affordable

Gravel is a fantastic budget-friendly option that many homeowners overlook. When properly compacted, gravel provides excellent drainage, stays level, and supports the sauna's weight effectively. This option works especially well in outdoor settings where drainage is a priority. Plan for a depth of at least 4–6 inches of compacted crushed stone.

03
Pavers
Most Attractive

Pavers offer a great combination of aesthetics and function. When set correctly on a compacted gravel or sand base, they create a firm, level surface that can handle the sauna's load without issue. They're also easy to adjust if any settling occurs over time. The most important factor with pavers is the base work — the pavers themselves are only as stable as what's underneath them. If you're going the paver route, invest in proper sub-base preparation and ensure the pavers are set tightly with no significant gaps or rocking.

04
Existing Deck
Most Convenient

If you have a deck that's structurally sound and level, it can be an excellent platform for your sauna — especially for our modular units. Before going this route, verify two things: first, that the deck is in good structural condition with no rot, damaged joists, or loose boards; and second, that it can handle the added weight load. Our modular saunas range from 750–1,200 lbs, so most standard residential decks built to handle 40–60 lbs per square foot will be more than sufficient. If in doubt, consult a contractor or structural engineer for a quick evaluation.

Modular vs. Custom: Different Needs

Modular Saunas

Our modular saunas are designed to be flexible — they work both indoors and outdoors. For indoor installations, no special foundation prep is needed; your existing floor is more than sufficient. For outdoor placements, your sauna can be set on any of the four foundation types listed above.

Modular units range in weight from 750–1,200 lbs depending on size. Because modular units arrive in a crate and are assembled on-site, the foundation needs to be ready before your delivery window. Assembly typically takes 2–3 people about 3–4 hours, so your crew will need clear, level access to the site.

One advantage of modular saunas is that they can technically be relocated if you ever move or reconfigure your yard. For this reason, many outdoor modular sauna owners opt for gravel or pavers over concrete, preserving flexibility for the future.

Modular Flat-Rate Shipping

All Sweat Kingdom modular saunas ship for a flat rate of $450 regardless of your location. Your unit will arrive in a crate, ready for on-site assembly. Have your foundation completed and your delivery area accessible before your scheduled delivery window.

Custom Saunas

Our custom saunas are built like small homes — stick-framed, insulated with mineral wool, and finished with high-grade exterior siding and steel roofing. Weighing between 2,000–4,000 lbs depending on size and configuration, their weight makes foundation selection even more critical. For custom units, we strongly recommend a concrete pad as the primary foundation option.

Custom saunas also have unique delivery requirements. Due to their size, a crane or placement machine is typically required to set them in their final position. Our team handles all of the logistics coordination — you simply need to ensure the delivery path is clear and the foundation is ready. You'll be responsible for freight and crane fees, but the coordination is completely handled on your behalf so the process is seamless.

Think of your custom sauna the way you'd think of a backyard shed or pool house — the foundation work comes first, and everything else follows from there.

Your Pre-Delivery Checklist

Use this list to confirm you're ready before your sauna arrives:

  • Foundation type selected and installed (concrete, gravel, pavers, or deck)
  • Foundation is fully level in both directions (within 1/8")
  • Site is clear of debris, vegetation, and obstructions
  • Delivery path to the site is clear and accessible
  • Electrician has been contacted and a quote received
  • Heater spec sheet shared with your electrician
  • Adequate clearance on all sides of the sauna footprint
  • For custom saunas: delivery coordination confirmed with Sweat Kingdom team
